Start with the intended contribution
The distinction is not simply practical versus theoretical. Both routes require theory, evidence, methodology, critical analysis, and an original contribution. The difference lies in where the research problem begins and where the contribution is intended to have its primary force.
A professional doctorate commonly begins with a persistent problem in practice and develops knowledge capable of improving decisions, systems, interventions, or professional fields. A research doctorate commonly begins with a gap in scholarly knowledge and develops an original contribution to the literature and discipline.
Understand the shared doctoral standard
Malta’s Qualifications Framework places PhD and professional doctorate qualifications at Level 8. That shared level reflects advanced knowledge, specialized research capability, autonomy, responsibility, and the production of original work.
The framework does not erase the differences between award types. The exact degree title, program specification, research architecture, assessment, and intended outcomes remain essential.
Choose by problem, evidence, and audience
A candidate investigating how an organization can redesign a governance process, improve a strategic intervention, or solve a recurring management problem may fit a professional doctorate. A candidate investigating an unresolved theoretical, empirical, or disciplinary question may fit a research doctorate.
The eventual audience also matters. Professional-doctorate research often addresses practitioners, organizations, and applied fields alongside scholars. PhD research is normally framed first as a contribution to academic knowledge, even when its implications are highly practical.
- Professional doctorate: an original contribution grounded in professional practice.
- Research doctorate: an original contribution grounded in a scholarly field.
- Both: rigorous methods, defensible evidence, ethical review, supervision, and examination.
- Neither: a guaranteed promotion, title, or professional license.
Compare the SMC DBA and PhD
SMC identifies its Doctor of Business Administration as a Level 8 professional doctorate and its Doctor of Philosophy as a Level 8 research doctorate. The DBA is designed for experienced professionals who want to convert substantial practice-based problems into applied doctoral inquiry. The PhD is organized around eight formal research phases and a field-specific original contribution.
Applicants should compare admission requirements, research fit, supervision capacity, assessment, and intended contribution before choosing a route.
Use a one-page decision test
Write the problem in one sentence, identify who needs the answer, state what new knowledge the project could create, and describe the evidence you can realistically obtain. If the center of gravity is organizational or professional intervention, test the DBA fit. If it is a disciplinary knowledge gap, test the PhD fit.
The program title should follow the research purpose. Choosing the title first and forcing the problem into it creates avoidable difficulty later.
